I’m Jill Schwieters. I am a healthcare executive and entrepreneur. I have grown up in healthcare, serving for over 15 years inside of large integrated healthcare systems, then had an opportunity to found and build my own company called CLO Healthcare where we served hundreds of clients across North America and around the world. And now recently, I’ve had the opportunity to work as a senior managing director for Surgical Directions. In addition, I’ve had just a great opportunity to serve other healthcare leaders through the National Center for Healthcare Leadership and truly believe that great leadership is what we need more of in healthcare today.
When I think about the qualities– and I thought a lot about this because qualities versus competencies, both critically important for leaders today. But certainly, one of the most important quality that every leader needs to demonstrate and have is integrity. You have to be trusted. You have to have high integrity in order to serve as a leader.
But more than ever today, you also have to be empathetic, have the ability to listen and understand the people that you’re serving with and working with. You have to have courage. Being a leader is very hard. And I think it’s harder today than ever. And leadership courage is often what gets us through some of the toughest challenges that we face.
And then, of course, agility. And I do think agility is over-communicated today. But I do think it is the right quality for all of us today– the ability to make decisions quickly and move and keep up with the changing times as well as the changing workforce that we’re serving. So those are some of the things I would share that I think I demonstrate as a leader but I think are the most important qualities for all of us in leadership.
